The Red-bellied Woodpecker and its Curious Name:
This has been my winter of birds. In the winter in Maryland there are no leaves on the trees to block your view and way fewer species to sort out. While many fair-weather friends head south, the woodpeckers stick around, and they are out looking for a good time. The Red Bellied Woodpecker is bigger than the more frequently spotted Downy, and quite nicely decorated.
NPR has a little 2 minute program called Bird Note that I have heard on the radio about three times. Yesterday I turned on the car and heard one of my favorite bird calls- and also one of ones I hear most often. This is a pretty trilly sound, and it stands out against the more musical notes that all those birds are courting each other with right now. If you listen a few times I promise that you will start hearing Red Bellieds everywhere.
